Hampton Roads NW Annex Naval Support Activity

Purpose:

To evaluate community needs and capabilities, and provide assistance to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads NW Annex; Commonwealth of Virginia and City of Chesapeake, Virginia; State of North Carolina and Counties of Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank, Perquimans and Gates, North Carolina; and other local jurisdictions.  The Annex's mission focuses on cryptologic and information support to Navy and other agencies. One of the critical tenants that function in this support capacity is the Forces Surveillance Support Center, which operates the Relocatable Over-the-Horizon Radar (ROTHER) system, and provides wide-area air and sea surveillance to military and law enforcement agencies for the Office of National Drug Control Policy.  Proper functioning of the ROTHER is influenced greatly by electromagnetic interference (EMI), particularly to the south in North Carolina.  The Annex's location in a rural area is an important factor for the communications activities that require minimal interference from surrounding activities, both on- and off-base.
