Meridian Naval Air Station , Mississippi

Lauderdale County and Meridian Naval Air Station plan for compatibility with civilian development and naval air base activities.

Lauderdale County served as the project sponsor and grantee for the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) for the region surrounding Meridian Naval Air Station (NAS).  Study participants included the City of Meridian, Town of Marion, Kemper and Lauderdale Counties, East Central Planning and Development District, Mississippi Military Community Council, and NAS Meridian.

The JLUS represents a community driven planning process between NAS Meridian and the surrounding communities to promote compatible civilian development in support of military readiness and defense capabilities; protect public health, safety, general welfare, and quality of life; promote the economic viability of the communities; and foster continued communication among NAS Meridian and the surrounding communities to address compatibility issues.

The study encompassed all operational areas of the installation, to include Navy Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) Joe Williams, as well as all land in the vicinity that may impact current and future operations.  NAS Meridian, located near Meridian and straddling both Kemper and Lauderdale Counties, is home to one of the Chief of Naval Air Training’s Jet Strike Pilot Training Wings, Training Wing One.

The main base is comprised of approximately 8,064 acres, and NOLF Joe Williams occupies approximately 1,255 acres.  The NAS Meridian provides advance pilot training to student naval aviators in T-45c jet aircraft.  Existing incompatible development in Accident Potential Zones, as well as lack of community policies, plans, and regulations to guide compatible development can have a negative impact on the training mission at the base.
