State of Alabama

DoD’s Office of Economic Adjustment issued a Defense Industry Adjustment grant to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) to conduct a supply chain analysis on Alabama’s defense industry. The supply map will focus on identifying defense contractors and suppliers across the state and understanding which contractors are best suited to diversify their customers beyond DoD. Additionally, the grant will continue efforts in northeast Alabama to prepare DoD contractors for new jobs through training and skills development initiatives.

In 2013, the Department of Defense (DoD) spent $11.3 billion on the Alabama defense industry, including military personnel and supporting contracts and contractors. Recent cuts have already included an estimated $2.5 billion impact to Alabama’s economy, which was ranked the fourth worst economy by the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia. As such, looming DoD budget cuts pose a severe economic threat to the state, its businesses, and its residents.
